Music Critic of the Year: @Discographies

A puckering wit and more than 20,000 followers – those are the only facts we know about the Twitter account @Discographies, where the author summarizes the entire catalogue of a renowned singer or band in 140 characters or fewer. Enlivening a less than stellar era of music criticism, @Discographies has devised a new structure that combines the Internet hallmark of snark with the pre-Internet prerequisite of expertise.

Zuckerberg in China: Huzzahs from Users, Hush from Alibaba

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg made another stop Thursday on his “vacation” tour of Chinese Internet companies, visiting the headquarters of Alibaba Group. Photos posted on the web showed the 26-year-old chatting with executives at the Chinese e-commerce giant, including Chairman Jack Ma.

The visit seems to have been a source of some sensitivity for Alibaba, for reasons that aren’t clear. Spokesman John Spelich, who is pictured in one of the photos along with Mr. Zuckerberg and Mr. Ma, declined to comment Thursday on whether or not the visit took place.

Officials at Baidu, Sina and China Mobile have been less sheepish about their meetings with Mr. Zuckerberg, whose visit has generated much excitement among Internet industry executives and enthusiasts in China. Indeed, while the government blocks access to Facebook from within China, many Chinese Internet users have welcomed Mr. Zuckerberg, whose wealth (and his Chinese-American girlfriend) have helped make him famous among China’s urban youth.

How to Remove DRM from WMV

Windows Media Video (WMV) was developed by Microsoft and these files are playable using Windows Media Player. There are numerous portable media players available which support WMV playback. You can use a .WMV file for either streaming or downloading. Downloaded Windows Media Files come with the protection by the DRM License itself. If you try to play it for the first time on your PC, then Windows Media Player will try and look for the license on the PC.
It's explicable that you would like to remove DRM from WMV files. You can play a windows media video file without obtaining a license from the digital rights management server. There are several ways of achieving this task of removing of DRM from WMV. Here are a few of freeware to help you to remove DRM from WMV:

1. freeme2
freeme2 (Download freeme2) is a free and open source DRM remover. It is used to remove DRM from Windows Media audio and video files. freeme2 is a command line application. You need to learn how to use console applications to run it.
How to use freeme2 (drag-n-drop)
Drag-n-drop method is much easier than the one using command line console:
Put your DRM protected media files in the same folder as Freeme2.
Extract your license keys. You can do this with drmdbg. If you use drmdbg you can take the drm2-i.key file generated by drmdbg, rename it to drm2.key and copy it to the FreeMe2 folder.
Drag your sample.wma file onto FreeMe2.exe. It starts up and runs fine.
How to use freeme2 (command line console)
Put your DRM protected media files in the same folder as freeme2.
Run the Windows command console: Hit "Start"->hit "Run..."->type CMD->Hit the "OK" button.
Then, once in the command console, chage the directiry by using the "cd" command to the directory where your FreeMe2 is located.
Extract your license keys. You can do this with drmdbg.
Type the following in the command line console: "freeme2" (without quotes) and press the Enter button.
2. Aiseesoft Total Video Converter
Aiseesoft Total Video Converter is a powerful video and audio converter for all popular media formats including: WMA, WAV, WMV, M4A, M4P, M4V, AAC, M4B, 3GP, AVI, ASF, MP4, FLV, MP3, etc. so users can easily enjoy the DRM protected formats with their mobile players like iPhone, iPod, PSP, etc.
How to use Aiseesoft Total Video Converter.
Click "Add File" to import files to the program.
Click "setting" to customize the parameters for output audio and video.
When you finish all the necessary settings, you can start conversion. The selected files in the file list will be automatically converted one by one after you click Start button. if you convert files that bought from iTunes Store, you need to do some setting as the image shows.
please click here to learn the full guide.

Total Video Converter

3. AnalogWhole
AnalogWhole (Download AnalogWhole) is a free Windows application that allows you to consolidate all your music into iTunes as MP3 files. Any music that is playable in Windows Media Player can be re-recorded as an MP3 file. Just tell AnalogWhole where your music library is, and it will automatically re-record the files as an MP3 file. In addition, it will add the converted song to iTunes for you.
With AnalogWhole you can convert all those WMA or WAV files you have that won't play on your iPod into MP3 files that will play on iPod.
The way AnalogWhole works is pretty straightforward. Almost all PC soundcards have the ability to simultaneously play music out one channel while recording music on another channel. The standard Windows audio mixer component allows the output channel to be routed back into the soundcard input channel. AnalogWhole uses the COM interface to Windows Media Player to play the music file and while it is playing, it records it and encodes it as an MP3 file. All tagging info (i.e. artist, song title, album et cetera) is transferred to the MP3 file as well.

AnalogWhole

4. Automate unDRM.
Free DRM removal from .WMV, .ASF, .WMA (Windows Media audio/video files). Included in the download pack: drmdbg, drm2wmv, DecryptIt.
You can Download Automate unDRM here.
Automate unDRM v2.0 can't crack DRM license. You must have VALID license files on your harddrive and be able to play the DRM protected files without restrictions. Automate unDRM v2.0 is intended to be used to make fair-use backups only. Please do not abuse this rule.
Automate unDRM is used to automate the DRM removal process by drmdbg and drm2wmv. drmdbg and drm2wmv don't convert your original Windows Media audio and video files, they just remove DRM header of the media file, so you get lossless conversion of DRM protected media files.
Automate unDRM works only with Windows Media Player 9 or 10.00.00.3646 (unless you update your drbdbg.exe).

5. FairUse4WM
FairUse4WM (Download FairUse4WM) can't crack DRM license. You must have VALID license files on your harddrive and be able to play the DRM protected files without restrictions.
FairUse4WM is intended to be used to make fair-use backups only. Please do not abuse this rule. FairUse4WM is a GUI version of drmdbg (DRM removal tool). drmdbg doesn't convert your original Windows Media audio and video files, it just removes DRM header of the media file, so you get lossless conversion of DRM protected media files.
FairUse4WM supports Windows Media Player 9, 10, 11 (individualization version up to .3930).
Basic requirements: Only works on individualized DRM file.
Requires Windows Media Player (WMP) 9, 10 or 11 beta 1 and 2. Although there is no support for WMP 11 final. Works with both individualized content and some DRMv1 files. Does not work with Win98 or similar.
The program's functioning can be verified by stripping DRM protection from Demo files from ezdrm.com, as well as those from other Microsoft Solution partners.
Note that some Windows Media Player installations will have multiple ECC key-pairs, so you will likely have to "Extract Keys" using multiple licensed files. If you find a file that doesn't convert, try extracting keys with it. Once your whole set of keys is extracted, you will no longer need to run Windows Media Player per file.

Larry to HP and IBM: We’re Coming for Your Server Customers

It’s not exactly a news flash that Oracle CEO Larry Ellison is one determined and competitive CEO. But it’s another thing to hear him say it. During tonight’s quarterly earnings call, as Oracle reported earnings that handily beat the expectations of analysts, Ellison several times slammed competitors Hewlett-Packard, IBM and SAP, and promised to best them all in the marketplace.

But he sounded particularly determined when articulating his vision for Oracle’s plans in the high-end server business, which is based primarily on the hardware business Oracle got as part of the Sun Microsystems acquisition.

Naturally, Ellison’s plans are nothing less than total domination in the world of high-end servers. Below is an audio clip, about three minutes in length, in which he articulates his vision.

In fairness to HP, which as usual bears the brunt of Ellison’s trash-talking, it has dismissed the benchmark about which Ellison is so proud of beating HP as outdated. Time will tell if that ultimately matters.

The clip begins with Oracle President Safra Catz congratulating Ellison on winning so many sailing races before giving him the floor.

Putting Social to Work: Sustainable Seafood Mapping

For the last 10 years, the Monterey Bay Aquarium has distributed wallet cards that give an at-a-glance guide to which types of seafood are sustainably fished and which are not because of overly depleted populations, destroyed habitats or some other reason.

Last year the aquarium’s Seafood Watch program launched an iPhone app that does the same thing on a searchable and localized scale.

And it’s been downloaded 325,000 times. So, this week, the Seafood Watch app got a social upgrade, which lets users contribute information about where they have actually found sustainable seafood for sale.

Like mobile social health applications such as RunKeeper, this is one of the more interesting interpretations of making a function social.

In the new Seafood Watch app, a feature called “Project FishMap” allows users to tag restaurants and markets across the United States to note what specific sustainable seafood is offered, and earn (of course!) virtual badges for their contributions. And users can also load up the app when deciding where to eat, so they can make their decision based on where sustainable seafood is available.

Eventually, perhaps, this user-generated seafood map could be made available for incorporation into other local apps like Yelp. But for now, the aquarium is just promising that an Android app will be released next year.

The idea behind the Seafood Watch project has been to enable consumers to show their preference by asking for sustainable options and voting for them with their wallets. But sometimes trying to make a better choice can get awfully confusing, when, for instance, the waiter at a restaurant has no idea where the cod came from (Atlantic wild-caught cod=”avoid”; Alaska longline cod=”best choice”).

However, the aquarium says the program has been effective in lobbying larger businesses–food service companies Compass Group and Aramark have committed to purchasing sustainable seafood, and Whole Foods Market has begun labeling its seafood with the project’s recommendations.

BuyWithMe Likely to Raise More Cash as Competitors Pull Ahead

BuyWithMe confirmed today that its CEO, Cheryl Rosner, has left the company after only eight months on the job.

To get the skinny, we caught up with the company’s Interim president, David Wolfe, who was promoted from chief product officer as the company seeks a new leader. Wolfe would not elaborate beyond echoing the company’s statement that the decision for Rosner to leave was mutual.

However, Rosner’s departure hints at how nascent the market for daily deals and social/group buying is, and how there’s still work to be done to figure out the economics.

The year-and-a-half old Groupon competitor is no exception. If you aren’t familiar, BuyWithMe is often considered the third- or fourth-largest outfit in the group-buying space. The company, which recently moved to New York City from Boston, operates in 12 markets, and has raised $21 million in venture capital. It has 93 employees.

Wolfe acknowledges that a hiring spree is necessary to catch up to its nearest rivals, Groupon and LivingSocial, and that it will likely need more capital to continue its aggressive expansion plans. “The intent will be to raise more money; it’s a probable event,” he said.

As it is, BuyWithMe will likely miss this year’s goal of being in 15 markets by at least one. But generally, Wolfe says, that’s not the problem: “We are taking a step back. What is most important is for our emerging markets to grow to maturity, and for us to push them over the hump and increase our market share.”

Right now, he claims, BuyWithMe’s best performing market is its first: Boston. Trailing close behind is New York City and Washington, D.C., but the other nine are struggling to have a deal every day. “They are performing as expected, given the focus level and resource level we’ve given them….It’s less that we stumbled strategically, but we really spread ourselves too thin to get into multiple markets, and now we are focusing on making sure we are providing great service.”

Wolfe acknowledges the competition by saying it’s a hard space to build brand loyalty. Consumers will gravitate to the best deal every time, so they are focusing on creating loyalty with merchants. “Our focus is on making sure we are delivering an amazing service to our merchants and consumers. A lot of people have jumped into the game, and it’s a challenging business. It’s not a small feat to deliver [deals] on a consistent basis.”

Does Wolfe believe there’s room for more growth in the market–beyond the successes of Groupon and LivingSocial?

His answer is yes. “I don’t think even with Groupon’s amazing execution that we are even close. We see a lot of blue ocean and a lot of untapped eyeballs on the consumer side across a lot of locations. The excitement over the past couple of months is not the end stage. We are seeing first innings, where a transformational shift is occurring on how retailers reach consumers. That’s fundamental.”

How to play DVD on Mac

This tutorial includes 4 parts:
Part 1, DVD Regions
Part 2, How to play DVD on Mac?
Part 3, How to Unlock DVD Regions on Mac?
Part 4, how to copy protected DVD Movie on Mac OS X

Part 1, DVD Regions
Region 1: North America; U.S. territories; Bermuda
Region 2: Europe; Western Asia; Kingdom of the Netherlands; Egypt, Japan, Lesotho, South Africa, Swaziland; British overseas territories, French overseas territories; Greenland
Region 3: East and Southeast Asia
Region 4: Oceania; Central and South America; Caribbean; Mexico
Region 5: Africa, Central and South Asia, Belarus, India, Mongolia, North Korea, Russia, Ukraine
Region 6: Mainland China

Part 2, How to play DVD on Mac?
VLC is part of a remarkably sophisticated suite of VideoLan applications available for a wide range of operating systems, ranging from Linux to Windows and, of course, Mac OS X.

Download and install VLC and open it, then select File > Open Disc. Click on the Disc tab, click on DVD, select the device, and click OK

Or select File > Open File..., select your VIDEO_TS folder, and voila! You're watching your movie.

Play DVD on Mac

Part 3, How to Unlock DVD Regions on Mac?
Most commercial DVDs use encryption that keeps them locked to one or more “region codes,” meaning the discs you pick up in other continents usually won't play on an American DVD player. If you believe the movie studios, this encryption is a necessary tool in the ongoing war against piracy. Basically, it helps them release the same movie in different parts of the world—at different times and for different prices. However, because pirates rarely resell legitimate copies of movies (they are pirates, after all), this system's primary effect is to prevent movie collectors and frequent travelers from enjoying legally purchased films once they get home.

There are some multi-region DVD players out there. They are perfectly legal, but they tend to be pricey and rare. And if you are the jet-setting type who is likely to pick up foreign flicks in the first place, you probably want to watch them on the go using your laptop. That's why the most frustrating part of region codes is the way they affect laptop DVD players.

Although laptop DVD drives are technologically capable of playing any DVD, they typically force you to switch among region settings to play imported discs. Try switching this setting more than a fixed number of times (typically five over the entire life span of the computer), and the setting will be locked forever.

For example, if you switch from Region 1 (the United States and Canada) to Region 3 (parts of Asia) to watch a kung-fu flick you picked up on a trip to Hong Kong, you'll have to switch back to Region 1 before playing any movies you purchased at your local Best Buy. Watching that one Jet Li movie just burned up two of your five switches—and not even reinstalling your operating system will get you more. Fortunately, some clever programmers have created software solutions that circumvent disc regions entirely, turning your notebook into a portable multiregional DVD player.

There are plenty of programs for Macs that allow you to rip DVD movies on Mac. I recommend Aiseesoft DVD Ripper for Mac which allows you to rip DVD movies on Mac easily.

DVD Ripper for Mac

This Mac DVD Ripper is fast in ripping DVD to all popular video and audio formats as it includes the features of DVD Ripper and DVD Audio Ripper.

It can rip DVD video to video formats including MP4, AVI, MOV, M4V, 3GP, MPG, MPEG, FLV, etc. and it can convert DVD audio to MP3, M4A, AAC, AC3, etc. It's the best solution to rip a DVD to video or audio formats on Mac. This solution has its advantages (chief among them is that watching movies off your hard drive uses far less battery life than reading them from an optical disc.)

If you do not want to spend money, I recommend downloading VLC, an open-source media player that sometimes circumvents region encoding. The DVD drives on different computers (including various Macs) come from diverse manufacturers, and VLC plays out-of-region discs on some, but not all of them. Unfortunately, there's no way to know if it will work on your system until you try. Fortunately, the program is free.

Part 4, how to copy protected DVD Movie on Mac OS X
Copy protected DVD action can turn into failure if you don't have appropriate software. Very often DVDs are protected against ripping and thus copying the contents of the disc to your hard disk doesn't work. Even if you do succeed in ripping the contents of the disc, to copy protected DVD also means to compress the files on your recordable DVD since the latter can only hold 4.4GB of data while the original DVD is more than 7GB in size. So the powerful and professional DVD copying software is necessary. And Aiseesoft DVD Copy for Mac is the proper software you need.

Step 1: Download and install DVD Copy for Mac.

How to put DVD movie into Windows Movie Maker and iMovie

If you want to edit a DVD movie with Windows Movie Maker or import several DVD clips into Mac iMovie to build a new DVD, but you get frustrated with the DVD format, this guide may help you solve the problem.

Before you get started, it will be helpful if you learn something about the DVD, WMM and iMovie.
General DVDs have CSS copy protection in MPEG-2 or VOB format.
(Windows) Windows Movie Maker supports WMV, AVI and MPG video files.
(Mac) iMovie accepts MOV and MPEG4 video files.

This guide includes two parts:
1. How to put DVD movie into Windows Movie Maker.
2. How to add DVD clips to Apple Mac iMovie .

Part1. How to put DVD movie into Windows Movie Maker

Step1. To put a DVD movie into Windows Movie Maker, you have to rip your DVD to WMV or AVI video first, and then you can load it into Windows Movie Maker. I’d prefer using Aiseesoft DVD Ripper to do this. You can get this program at: http://www.aiseesoft.com/dvd-ripper.html Then install and run it, put your DVD disc into your DVD drive, click “Load DVD” to locate your DVD file and import it, or load it by clicking “Load IFO File” to add DVD IFO file. (This DVD Ripper can rip copyright protected DVD movies, but you should remember that it’s illegal rip DVD for any business purposes)

Rip DVD with DVD Ripper for WMV

Step2. Select output format and subtitle

After you load the DVD files, click the format drop-down list to select “WMV – Windows Media Video (*.wmv)” or “AVI – Audio Video Interleaved (*.avi)” as the output format. A regular DVD movie has multiple subtitles and audio tracks, and you can select the right one for you. If you just want a certain part of the DVD movie, you can click “trim” to cut the DVD movie. Just drag the timeline bar to set the start and end time, and then blue line will be the captured parts.

Rip DVD into Windows Movie Maker

For advanced user, if you want to output higher quality video, click the “Settings” button to open the panel, here you can customize video bitrate, audio bitrate, resolution, framerate, etc. Higher bitrate will result in bigger file size.

Step 3. Start to convert

After the above steps, you just need to click “Start” and wait for the conversion to be finished. It provides the fastest conversion speed (>300%), completely support dual core CPU.

Step 4. Edit DVD with Windows Movie Maker (optional)

Run Windows Movie Maker, in the “Movie Task” bar, click “Add Video” to browse your computer and located the converted files, and then you can start to make personal movies.

Edit DVD with Windows Movie Maker

Tips:Many users may wonder how they can convert Windows Movie Maker file (*.MSWMM) to other video format. Actually, A *.MSWMM file is not a video file. It is a project file of Movie Maker (more like a record file). You have to open this file in Windows Movie Maker and save the movie to your computer: Go to Movie Tasks bar > Finish Movie > Save to my computer. After that you will have a WMV file which can be converted to another video format or burned to DVD.

Part2. How to add DVD clips into Apple iMovie.

iMovie is similar to Windows Movie Maker, it supports MOV and MP4 video, so you just need to convert your DVD movie to the right format. Aiseesoft DVD Ripper has a Mac Version which supports both Mac OS Tiger and Leopard; you can download it for free from here: http://www.aiseesoft.com/dvd-ripper-for-mac.html
It is easy to use for the operation steps being similar to the windows version.

put DVD into Apple iMovie

When the conversion is finished, you can run the iMovie, build a new project, and then drag the converted files to the work space to make personal files.
When the task is finished, In the Menu bar, Click "File" -> "Export" and save it as QuickTime video.

Salesforce Acquires Hosted Apps Platform Heroku

A day after launching a hosted database service, Salesforce.com announced this morning that it will pay $212 million in cash for the privately held Heroku, a hosted service for applications written in Ruby on Rails, the open-source Web-development language.

Launched in 2007 with seed funding from Y Combinator, Heroku landed $10 million in a B Round led by Ignition Partners in May. Other investors include Redpoint Ventures, Baseline Ventures and Harrison Metal Capital.

Heroku has made a name for itself as a hosting service for Facebook applications. Its most widely cited customer is Cardinal Blue, whose Facebook apps include Travel Balloon and QuizCreator. Other Heroku customers include Clobby, a group chat application, and FlightCaster, which makes a handy application that predicts flight delays.

Heroku founder James Lindenbaum said in a blog post that Heroku will remain independent. Parker Harris, Salesforce’s EVP of technology said of Heroku on the official company blog: “This is the platform as a service I would have wanted to build apps on had it existed in 1999.”

By acquiring Heroku, Salesforce is getting into the business of development in Ruby on Rails, a widely used open-source Web development language that’s been used to build Web brands such as Twitter, Groupon and Hulu.

Heroku employees will get about $27 million worth of Salesforce shares, and Salesforce will pay about $10 million for unvested Heroku shares. All consider its a big acquisition for Salesforce, which had about $770 million in cash and short-term investments in the bank as of the quarter ended Oct. 31. However, the market seems to like the deal, as Salesforce shares are trading up 2.5 percent, or $3.63, as of 6:45 am PT.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek Live at D: Dive Into Mobile

Spotify’s Daniel Ek, who heads up the most talked about streaming music service in Europe, continues to promise a U.S. launch this year.

But the company has been unable to strike deals with U.S. music labels, which fear popularity of the service could cut back on sales of CDs and digital downloads. In Europe, the popular service offers unlimited tracks for free, or users can subscribe for an ad-free version.

With three weeks left in the year, will the Swedish entrepreneur keep his promise? Stay tuned as Ek takes the stage with MediaMemo’s own Peter Kafka at D: Dive Into Mobile.

10:06 am: Peter takes the stage to welcome Daniel Ek.

10:08 am: Peter: Spotify is the most awesome music service that you can’t get in the U.S. It’s Dec. 7; can you get it in the U.S.?

Daniel: No, you can’t. There are more complexities. We have to do deals with music labels, etc. It’s hard, he says. “It’s a business problem and a product problem at the same time.”

10:09 am: Daniel is still eluding the question.

10:09 am: We are definitely going to do the U.S., you’ll see. I’m here today.

Peter: You can’t commit to launching in the U.S.?

Daniel: I can’t commit to a specific date.

10:10 am: With no news on a launch date, Peter asks Daniel how it works.

Daniel: You download it to your PC, and it’s also supported on a host of mobile phones. The general idea is that you can access music for free, with adverts, or if you pay, you can take it with you. The limit is 20 hours of music a month.

10:11 am: Daniel: There’s not that many ads; the fee is 10 euros. It will be $10 in the U.S. (Whenever it comes, I suppose.)

10:11 am: Peter: This sounds like a lot of products–Rhapsody, Napster, Thumbplay, etc. What’s different?

Daniel: The concept isn’t different, but more people now are consuming more music than ever. You aren’t just a punk rocker, but you may also be listening to old-school blues, etc. Music has to adapt to a consumption model.

10:13 am: Peter: Do we no longer value music because of Napster 10 years ago?

Daniel: Yes, that’s part of it, but people also want to have access to everything on every device. In the past year, we’ve seen the adoption of smartphones. Pandora has been very successful because of smartphones. People are consuming a lot more of it.

10:14 am: Peter: It’s all free, so this is a problem for the producers who aren’t getting money from anyone.

Daniel: That’s a problem, but we’ll figure out ways to provide value that people are willing to pay for.

Peter: How many subscribers do you have in Europe?

Daniel: 750,000 paying customers, who pay about 10 euros a month.

Peter: Okay, that’s up from half-a-million earlier this year.

10:15 am: Daniel: What’s unique about Spotify and why we are growing so fast…

How fast? Peter asks.

Daniel: We launched on mobile in September 2009, so it’s been about a year.

The value is convenience and accessibility and packaging it in a good way (i.e., some of the stickiness comes from users creating lists and building their libraries).

10:17 am: Daniel: Another thing helping our growth is social networks, he says. They have a huge impact on people sharing content. It’s getting to become the primary way of how I find out what’s going on.

10:18 am:( It’s demo time! For all of those who have special access, or have hacked it, you know what this looks like already.)

10:18 am: Daniel is showing off his playlists, some of which come from Spotify and some from tracks he already owns. He’s showing this offline (because he doesn’t want to incur roaming fees), so he can’t demonstrate how you’d search for new music.

10:20 am: Peter: Are people comfortable with renting songs now, and listening to music in the cloud?

Daniel: This is something the industry needs to work on to make it 100 percent reliable, but it lets people have access anywhere.

10:21 am: Daniel says he wants to provide music to users “super fast.” But he sure is dragging his feet when it comes to providing it to U.S. consumers…ho hum….

10:22 am: Peter: People are still buying CDs.

Daniel: People are always asking me why. Is it because they want to own it? I don’t think so.

10:23 am: Daniel: Everyone expects things for free on the Web, but Apple is showing that people are willing to pay for apps.

10:24 am: Peter: I hear about how Apple might be working behind the scenes, telling music labels not to work with Spotify. Have you heard that?

Daniel: I read the news, so I’ve heard about it. I don’t actually try to focus on what Apple is doing, or what others are doing. I am, first and foremost, a user.

10:26 am: Daniel: China has 400 million Internet users, and one of the top things they do on the Internet is music. For me, it strikes me as odd, the value of the entire music business is $15 billion.

Peter: It used to be $40 billion. What’s the holdup with the labels?

Daniel: It just takes time. There are a bunch of companies that say they want to do it this year. But at the end of the day, you can only do so much that’s in your control. We believe in our model.

Peter: Which is to give music away for free. Would you change your model here?

Daniel: We would not just launch a subscription service here. Right now you can pretty much access any music for free. YouTube is one of the biggest sources in the world.

10:30 am: Peter: Are you raising money now in order to pay more to get the music deals done?

Daniel: No, but I wouldn’t rule it out in the future, though.

10:31 am: What’s it like to work with Sean Parker, who was from Napster and Facebook.

Daniel: I just saw “The Social Network.” I’m not sure if it’s true, but I really liked it. Sean wrote me this really long email about all the flaws in Spotify. He’s so great at product, so for me, this is someone who has been thinking about the product since the beginning of Napster.

10:32 am: Peter: Any audience questions? Jokingly, he asks, “How about from Rob Glaser (former CEO of RealNetworks)?”

10:33 am: Next question from Glaser! He asks about the music label deals he signed in Europe.

Daniel: It’s a really interesting time. If this is going to be the next big thing, that’s why they are taking their time. Is it going to be a la carte, or subscription?

10:35 am: Peter: Google has been talking about music, and Facebook is thinking about it. Would you link up?

Daniel: We are a developer on both Facebook and Android.

Peter: I mean deep core integration.

Daniel: We would never do any exclusive deals. We want to get music to become like water. We think it’s the most social object in the world. If music could flow freely on the Web, it would surpass the popularity of photos. People are paying by looking at ads, buying tracks or subscribing.

10:37 am: Last question from the audience, about Nokia-bundled music with smartphones through a service called Comes With Music. “Do you think those kinds of integrations can work?”

Daniel: I do. Our whole strategy is around the platform. I don’t know how well the integration worked with the phones, but it wasn’t playing nicely with the Web, or with the iPhone. Like the Kindle. It works on the Kindle, but you can also read books on the iPad. Whether people pay for the device and it’s bundled in, or whether it’s part of a TV package, it doesn’t matter.

10:39 am: That’s it folks–thanks for tuning in!

Microsoft Adds “Tracking Protection” to IE9

Microsoft said Tuesday it is adding a new feature to its upcoming Internet Explorer 9 that will give consumers more information about what information is being tracked on them.

In a Webcast, Microsoft Vice President Dean Hachamovitch said that today’s consumers have very little knowledge of what personal information is being tracked by various third parties.

“Tracking Protection in IE9 puts people in control,” Hachamovitch said. It allows, for example, one to view part of a Web site without viewing content coming from specified third-party sites.

The new feature, Hachamovitch said, is coming in the release candidate version of IE9, which is due early next year. By default the new feature will be off, but a user’s choice will persist from one browser session to another.

The move is about more than just cookies, Microsoft said, allowing users to create both a list of sites they do want to allow third-party access to, as well as a list of sites that should be blocked. Those lists could be created by the users themselves, or by businesses or other entities. Microsoft said it expects tech enthusiasts to be the first creators of such lists, but over time it expects privacy lists to come from a wide range of places, including from privacy groups.

Microsoft also said that the new feature is complementary to, and not a replacement for, its InPrivate filtering, which hides browsing history on the machine itself.

Hachamovitch said the company is opting to keep InPrivate off by default in IE9 because of the value consumers get by having a browser know which sites one has visited.

The timing is interesting, coming just a half-hour before Google’s Chrome announcement.

Microsoft’s Plan B to Make Money in Phones: Patents

Although Microsoft is still hoping that Windows Phone 7 proves to be a hit, the company doesn’t see its success as the only way to make a profit from all those millions it has poured into mobile phone technology.

At a dinner with reporters on Monday night, Microsoft top lawyer Brad Smith said that the company also sees a chance to make money from its vast pool of smartphone-related patents. He wouldn’t quantify the revenue opportunity, but conceded it doesn’t expect to be able to get as much per phone as it does when someone uses its software.

That said, the overall market opportunity from patents might still be bigger, especially when you consider Microsoft’s paltry share of the phone market today.

Smith declined to put a total dollar figure on the patent opportunity or say how much it might equate to on a per-phone basis.

“We would be hard-pressed to get more for patents than we get for software,” he said. However, Smith also agreed that the patent revenue could eventually be vastly larger than what Microsoft has made to date by licensing Windows Mobile and now Windows Phone 7.

“We’d still rather sell software,” he said, but added, “either way, it gives us an opportunity to recoup [our] costs.”

At the moment, there is chaos in the phone patent arena, with Apple suing HTC, Microsoft suing Motorola and Oracle suing Google, to list just a partial court docket. However, Smith said he would not be at all surprised to see things shake out in the next couple of years into a manageable patent licensing arrangement, not unlike the one that exists with the radio portion of a cellphone today.

About $20 per modern phone goes to patents, with the lion’s share of that going to Qualcomm. On the smartphone side, Smith said Microsoft and Apple hold the lion’s share of the intellectual property.

“I think there is a good chance the industry will work through the patent issues over the next several years,” he said.

While Smith said he can’t speak for Apple, he said that Microsoft is actively interested in licensing its patents, noting the company’s agreement with Taiwanese cellphone maker HTC (a company that makes Android devices, as well as those running Microsoft’s mobile operating system).

“By entering into an agreement with HTC, we effectively signaled we are open for business when it comes to licensing,” Smith said.

Smith noted that Motorola and HTC, together, account for most of the Android market. This is probably the most fertile patent ground for Microsoft, since Apple and Microsoft have a patent-swap deal that covers some technologies and also both hold a fair bit of intellectual property in the area.

The generally affable Smith was not all sunshine and rainbows, however: “If we can’t get a reasonable royalty then we will seek an injunction.”

Of course, even if the monetary impact from licensing patents for phones could rival that of selling software, it lacks the strategic benefits Microsoft gets from having its operating system on phones.

Windows Phone 7 devices carry not only Microsoft’s operating system, but also versions of Office, Bing, Zune and Xbox Live.

The computing world is increasingly shifting to one in which key software runs not just on computers, but on a panoply of mobile devices as well. Microsoft itself has talked about the notion of “three screens and a cloud,” with the phone being one of those all-important three screens.
